Studio She®

It’s true….one of Studio She’s secrets is that we use Olaplex in the salon and on all custom colored hair extensions.  Clients see us mixing Olaplex No. 1 to color/bleach and Olaplex No. 2 after rinsing color/bleach.  Olaplex No. 3 is a take home product which is used once a week.

What is Olaplex?

One word:  MAGIC

Insurance for your hair and your hair extensions.  Olaplex is a BOND PROTECTOR and is to be thought of only as such.

What isn’t Olaplex?

A conditioning treatment.

Many salons and stylists are marketing that Olaplex is a conditioning treatment when in all actuality it isn’t.  I was in a class with Tracey Cunningham (Celebrity Colorist) and she reminded us that Olaplex is formulated by a Scientist and it’s sole purpose is to keep the hair in tact.  It protects the structure of the hair that is usually damaged by ammonia, peroxide and all the other chemicals found in hair color and bleach.

What is the price of the Olaplex Treatment?

Personally, I add Olaplex No. 1 at no cost to my clients.  If it’s needed then how can I not protect the integrity of the hair?!  I have incorporated Olaplex into my pricing.  Not everyone agrees with me on this and I have witness salons offering Olaplex for up to $90.

Hair Extensions

Olaplex works great on hair extensions!

Olaplex is highly effective when working on 100% human hair extensions. Remember that a company can legally label extensions 100% Human Hair as long as they contain at least 80% human hair. Also, some extensions have a keratin-like coating on them and can be colored with textile dyes, which can prevent Olaplex from being fully effective. Always do a test strand when working with extensions as results vary due to unknown prior color processes.

When using Olaplex on human hair extensions, it is best to avoid the base when applying a treatment. As Olaplex No. 2 is cream based, this can cause slippage so take normal precautions. We recommend applying Olaplex No. 2 mid shaft to ends. You may also use diluted No.1 as a treatment if concerned with use of cream form.

If doing an Olaplex treatment prior to extension application, simply shampoo twice thoroughly to remove any residue.

I have always had mad love for Gwyneth Paltrow’s blog  goop.  It’s a collection of DIY, Fashion, recipes, City vibes and mom “stuff”.    She is also a pretty awesome actress and if you didn’t know she is a Philanthropist.  Which in my eyes means everything.  The list is long of those that she helps including The American Cancer Society, Charlize Theron’s Africa Outreach Project, Unicef and more.

Apparently Gwyneth Paltrow experienced some major mane damage after a few Brazilian Blowouts and was turned onto Viviscal hair gwoth pills.  After 6 months she told Harpers Bazaar that she see’s “major difference” in her hair.

viviscal-extra-strength-hair-nutrient-tablets-350x350

If there is one thing I feel intuitvely is that Gwyneth isn’t a BS type of gal.  I wouldn’t imagine her to put her name to a product that didn’t work.  That said, I mentioned it to a client of mine (Shannon).  Months later she came in for her usual color and hair extensions and I saw a noticable difference.  6 moths later the top of her hair, which has always been quite thin, IS fuller.

That said, I now take Viviscal.  I talk about it, promote it and often when a lady visits me for a consultation I recomend that she takes these little magic pills twice a day along with lowering her Ammonia and laying off over styling and damaging to her already fragile hair.  The bottom line is that I specialize with thin/fine hair and all things hair extensions.  Anything that actually works is sorta a BIG deal to me.

What is the change I have noticed?  My fringe is finally to my chin!  Baby hairs are coming in along my hair line, which hey, when your aging that hair line doesn’t stay the way I wanted it too!  Just sayin 😉

The two piece or two plait braid known and loved as the fishtail braid.  Blake Lively is wearing a ponytail wrap around hair extension that is braided into her own hair thus creating a thick, disheveled fishtail braid.

20 years ago I wore wrap around and clip on ponytails.  That was when Sade was known for her ponytail and the era of “smooth operator” rocked the charts.  Ok so I am dating myself….wowsa.

Jennifer Lopez is known for the high slicked back ponytail.  She seriously never leaves home without some type of “addition”.  Love her and love her hair…extensions.

Wrap around ponytails can be worn loose, braided or fishtail.

Studio She carries the perfect wrap around ponytail that will be custom colored to match your natural hair color.  You then can incorporate your own hair and the wrap around and create various braids and looks.

IMG_3484IMG_3496The above photo shows you a simple fishtail braid, imagine how much thicker it would be if you incorporated your own hair with the wrap around!

Here is a video on how to fishtail your braid featuring Lauren Conrad.

Years ago someone mentioned she used Kool-Aid  to create a dip-dye effect.

So why Kool Aid vs Hair Chalk?

images-1

  • Kool-Aid is easy to access.   If your a last minute gal and slightly impulsive then shazam a grocery store is all you need to get the party started.
  •  Kool-Aid is available in a wide range of flavours and in individual packets.  Meaning you can mix and create great colors!  You can get down with your creative self.
  •  Kool-Aid is a natural alternative to hair dye as it contains no harsh chemicals (obviously – because you drink it!)
  •  The individual sachets make it easy to try different colors on your hair and you can create multi colored highlights, panels or an all over color.  Using the Kool-Aid powders will create a semi-permanent color which will stay on your hair for 4-6 weeks.
  • *Overall color result will vary depending on the color of your natural hair.   The lighter the hair color the more pastel or vibrant the color.  If your hair is blonde but a yellowy blonde be careful with blue Kool Aid.  Blue and yellow = green.  Probably not the look you are going for. 😉
  • Untitled-326

Hair chalk is easier to apply visually and typically purchased online.  But where is the fun in that?!

TIP:  Sugar free all the way!  The last thing you need is sticky sugary hair.

What you need
Petroleum Jelly
2 to 3 Sugar-free Kool-Aid sachets in the flavours you want
Conditioner
Water
Glass mixing bowl
Wooden spoon
Latex Gloves
Toothbrush (for application, alternatively you can use your fingers)
Foils (for highlights or panels).  You can also use saran wrap.
Shower cap (optional)

How to mix

Step 1
Firstly decide on the color you want and then use a glass bowl to mix the Kool-Aid to get the desired end result (see the color combinations chart above). At this stage we are just mixing dry powder together to get an idea of the color.

Step 2
Once you’re happy with the color, add a little cold water to the powder to make a paste. The paste should be thick and creamy so add just a few drops at a time until you get the right consistency. If it is too thin then the color won’t take to the hair.

Step 3
Petroleum jelly to the rescue! Dab your hairline, ears and anywhere else you do not want to stain your skin.

Step 4
Add a few drops of thick conditioner to the paste, then using the toothbrush or your fingers apply the paste to your hair and massage it in. Make sure it’s evenly distributed and that the color goes deep into the hair, which will create a level finish.

Step 5
Once applied, wrap your hair in cling wrap, or if you are creating colored sections or high-lights, wrap the hair in foil. This will help the color develop overnight. You can also wear a shower cap to sleep in to keep your foils in place.

Step 6
In the morning, rinse off the Kool-Aid and then shampoo and condition as normal. Your hair will be colored without any of the chemicals you find in regular hair dyes and you’ll have created your own individual look. Plus, your hair will smell fruity!

Hair extensions are not for those who only want length.  Extensions are for each and everyone of us gals!  Think of it as the accessory that you have always been missing out on!

Jennifer Lopez, in my opinion, is one of the hottest celebrities of 2017.

5 Reasons to say YES to wearing Hair Extensions

1. Length: Adding length for those who cannot achieve long locks on your own or are tired of growing out your hair.  Or incase of a botched hair cut you can quickly gain the length back that you thought you wanted to cut off.

jennifer-lopez4

2. Volume: Adding extensions gives you the volume and density that we oh-so want!  In the era of Victoria Secret Models and Jennifer Lopez,  it is possible to keep up with the trends and gorgeous look of thicker fuller hair.

A little addition goes a long way.

3. Covering thinning areas:  Wigs, wigs and more wigs!  Some woman suffer from female pattern baldness, certain extensions help to mask or even cover the hair loss.  This area is typically on the sides and below the round of the head.  I wouldn’t suggest attaching hair extensions to the crown area as they will show.  In that case I would suggest a top piece/wig.  J-LO Doesn’t have thinning hair but she does wear many hair additions (wigs) that could be used for women that have thinning hair.

4. Bangs/Ponytails:  You can create a the hair you’ve always wanted by adding clip in bangs, wrap around/clip on ponytails.  Fun and easy to use!

5. Adding color: Using extensions to add color (instead of coloring their hair) is a great way to change your haircolor as often as they would like without causing damage.  Jennifer Lopez uses hair extensions to add highlights often.

A few stores online claim that Tape Hair Extensions are so easy to use and YOU can apply them on your own and that there is no need to go the salon for a professional application.  WHOA NELLY!

I always raise my brows to that because we all know that applying your own extensions is a recipe for disaster.

This poor girl has the right idea but the wrong execution.  Leave it to the professionals to apply your tape hair extensions to

A) protect your hair from damage and B) Apply them so others can’t see them! JEEZ!
